Parkmedia – Mediapro uses QNAP for post-production of digital media

  • Background

Parkmedia Audiovisual is part of the Mediapro group. Located in the Barcelona area, it is dedicated to the provision of audiovisual services. Its main business focus is the leasing of television sets for filming, along with any other associated technical services, including production and post-production.

  • Challenge

Parkmedia’s philosophy is to incorporate the postproduction area with performance control, generating a high level of dialogue between the set and the postproduction systems. “The popularity of new formats and the disappearance of tapes in the field of audiovisual production has made it so that we constantly face greater storage requirements on television sets and in audiovisual facilities,” says David Puig.

On the other hand, improvements in television display and screen resolution in general has also increased file sizes, as well as the sheer number of files that need to be transmitted at the highest possible speed. “We work with extremely heavy media, very high bit rates, and many times in multi-cam. Our biggest challenge has been to find a server that supports such a heavy workflow. This is where QNAP plays a key role in our facilities,” says Carlota López, Postproduction Technical Coordinator at Platós Parkmedia.

Solution

Parkmedia was able to adapt to new formats and heavy data flows thanks to the QNAP Enterprise NAS. It allows the company to continue offering complete services with maximum reliability and satisfaction, despite shifting paradigms.

Several workstations and editing clients can function directly and simultaneously using the QNAP NAS on a 10GbE network. This cuts transfer times and storage problems with editing clients and resolves the issue of decentralization of files without leading to any performance impacts.

Benefits

SSD cache acceleration and 10GbE connectivity that can be aggregated and distributed among several workstations with simultaneous access are critical to this solution. In this manner, the maximum flow of IOPS is guaranteed, allowing for editing without cuts and slowdowns when using several operators simultaneously with the same QNAP NAS.

In addition, the new over-provisioning feature provided by QNAP has helped them to resolve bottlenecks and interruptions that occurred when the editing teams were working at maximum capacity.

“All of these are reasons why we are using a considerable number of QNAP storage devices in our facilities with great success,” says David Puig.
